Algonquin is the very first provincial park in Ontario, it is also one of the largest! The park offers something for everyone since it offers a diverse variety of scenic views, as well as a variety of activities.

Things to do in Algonquin:

  • Hiking

  • Visiting the museum
  • Wildlife watching
  • Canoeing
  • Backpacking
  • + more

Hiking

There are many trails to explore, some of them are open all year! Many of the trails offer lookouts, historical features, lakes, boardwalks, and more. Here is a list of trails to explore:

  • Barron Canyon
  • Bat Lake
  • Beaver Pond
  • Berm Lake
  • Big Pines
  • Booth’s Rock
  • Brent Crater and Tower
  • Centennial Ridges
  • Hardwood Lookout
  • Hemlock Bluff
  • Lookout Trail

  • Spruce Bog Boardwalk
  • Track and Tower

  • Whiskey Rapids

Backpacking

One of the best ways to really explore a place is by sleeping in it. I recently backpacked the first loop of the Western Uplands trail in Algonquin and it was incredible (read more about it here). These are the backpacking routes that Algonquin has to try!:

  • Western Uplands
  • Eastern Pines
  • Highlands

Wildlife

A really exciting opportunity when heading to a place like Algonquin is the chance to see wildlife. Make sure you prepare to see wildlife and take precautions. Make sure you are aware while on the road that wildlife can cross at any time. Some wildlife that you could see are:

  • Moose
  • Black bears
  • Beavers
  • Wolves
  • Deer
  • Loon
  • Birds
  • Insects
  • Fish

Seasons

Different seasons bring out different beautiful features of the park. I have been going to Algonquin since I was a young girl, so I’ve seen it through many feet of snow, through budding leaves, hot summer days, and crispy fall temperatures. Now it’s beyond doubt a great place to view autumn foliage because of the multiple lookouts and many, many trees. But, I also think this is a great place to visit in the winter because the views are remarkable. Summer is a busier time of year, and if you do go in the summer, make sure you are protected from the sun and bugs. No matter what season, don’t forget to stay hydrated!

Algonquin Provincial Park is one of my favourite places in Ontario because of all it’s beauty, and how suitable it is for anyone-families, solo hikers, dates, even pets.
