Tobermory will always hold a special place in my heart. After all, I did get engaged on Flowerpot Island.
All of the Bruce Peninsula is stunning, and there seems to be an endless amount of trails. There are spots to backcountry camp as well. But, Halfway Log Dump is the first trail I did in Tobermory and it stole a piece of my heart.
The hike is short (if you park here- but you can reach it from the Bruce Trail) but it is worth seeing for all of the views; crystal clear waters, white rocks, and small cliffs. I definitely recommend good footwear for this trail since there are many rocks and rough terrain. You can walk to the Grotto from here, which is about 7km one way. I recommend doing that trek if you have the time.
The origin of the name for Halfway Log Dump came from this location being a dump spot for timber back in the day. The logs would get floated to other locations to build homes and furniture.
Tobermory is a gem in Ontario because it is so different from the rest of southern Ontario. The turquoise waters, cliffs, caves, and trees are so magnificent. Tobermory also has very cute restaurants and motels if you are planning on staying for a night or more. My 23rd birthday was spent exploring Tobermory, and I think it is the best birthday I have had. A lot of the locations are kid-friendly, this trail and Singing Sands are where I like to bring my kids.
My top recommendations for places to visit in the Bruce Peninsula are Halfway Log Dump, the Grotto, Flowerpot Island, and Lions Head.
I’m hoping to get back to the Bruce Peninsula shortly, so stay tuned for that!
