How To: Start a Fire in Wet Weather

Need some tips on starting a fire in the rain/in a wet environment? Here are some go-to tips to help!

  • Foundation – you do not want to build a fire on wet ground, so prepare a foundation out of either rocks, bark, or logs to separate the fire from the ground
  • Tools – look around do see what you may be able to use. Matches, Lighters, Twine, Paper, Cotton Balls, Dry Spaghetti, Steel Wool, Dry Leaves, Corn Chips, and Twigs are ideal
  • Use wood from inside of logs
  • When you have a fire going, continue to lay other wood beside it to start drying them out
  • Bring extra kindling and fire-starters with you when you travel
  • Start with small wood like twigs and work your way up to logs when you have dried them out
  • Put a fire treated tarp over your campfire to protect it from rain if you have it, if unavailable, use your body as a rainsheild
  • Keep blowing directly on the ember you create at a steady force

Be patient. Starting a fire in wet weather is very challenging! Especially if you aren’t prepared.

I hope these tips are helpful!

We created this fire after a lengthy rain with just a lighter, twine and wet wood.
