Track and Tower Trail, Algonquin Park ON

Algonquin Provincial Park is one of Ontario’s greatest treasures. There are so many things to see in Algonquin from incredible wildlife to breathtaking lookouts. I’ve been going to Algonquin since I can remember, but I never had completed most of the bigger trails.

Brodi and I had our daughter Xyla at grandma’s for a weekend in August, so we decided to use one of our no-toddler days to have a go at the Track and Tower trail.

We took our 6-month-old son, Beau, which was not as difficult as I thought it would be. The extra weight of him in the carrier just made it a better workout.

It was a pretty hot day, but thankfully there are so many trees that the entirety of the trail is shaded.

The beginning of the hike was alongside Cache Lake which has spectacular views right from the start.

Along the trail, there is a beautiful stream that creates rapids and small waterfalls. There are boardwalks to walk on and quite a few historical sites to admire. There are foundation points of some of Algonquin’s railroad history that is shown throughout the trail, as well as log cribs and the old fire tower location.

Nearing the lookout, there is a large set of wooden stails to tackle before you get the rewarding views.

The stairs before the lookout.

Once you conquer the stairs, it’s a short walk to the main lookout – and WOW is it worth the long trek. Seeing overtop of the woodland realm and Cache Lake, it’s just something you need to take in.

I documented this hike on the AllTrails app, and we walked exactly 8km in 2hrs 40mins (we had lunch at lookout too). We burned 1500 calories and the average elevation gain was 280m.

Pure relief once we finished the trail.

This was one of my favourite hikes that I have done to date. It was challenging, especially with a baby attached to me, but it was so worth it.

If you’re looking for a great workout with a great payoff, I highly recommend the Track and Tower trail in Algonquin Provincial Park.

Kate
